Geely considering three Chinese Volvo plants

Shortly before acquiring Swedish automaker Volvo from Ford last month, Geely announced that its expansion plans for Volvo would include an assembly plant in China primarily to serve the world's fastest growing market. Now, the automaker says that it might build as many as three Volvo assembly plants in China.

No firm decision has been made, however, as Volvo's board of directors and the Chinese government both need to approve additional assembly plants in China. In addition, Geely chairman Li Shufu says that there is no great sense of urgency in adding more plant capacity yet.

"It takes time," Li told Reuters. "It may take years."

Three plants, a Geely spokesman said, would give Volvo the capacity of around 300,000 units annually in China - that could help to nearly double Volvo's 2009 global sales of 334,000 units. It's not expected that any of the plants would supply Volvo markets outside of China; Geely has indicated that it has no plans to dismantle Volvo's Torslanda, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium, plants.

According to the Geely spokesman, the company is looking at the Jiading district on the outskirts of Shanghai, the southwestern China city of Chengdu, and the northeastern China city of Daqing for the plants.

Já foi há tanto tempo? Eu estava convencido que tinha sido algures em 2009, mas devo estar a confundir com a introdução das versões Drive.

Volvo anuncia novo modelo rival do Volkswagen Golf

Volvo anuncia novo modelo rival do Volkswagen Golf

Volvo to hire 200 workers in Sweden to meet rising demand

Volvo to hire 200 workers in Sweden to meet rising demand

STOCKHOLM (Bloomberg) - Volvo Cars plans to hire 200 workers in Sweden through March to meet an expected rise in demand, a spokesman said.

Volvo, acquired from Ford Motor Co. in August by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., will need to boost the workforce at the plant in Gothenburg, where the company is based, to about 3,400 as it plans to expand production there to 52 cars per hour from 48, spokesman Per-Ake Froberg said.

“We want to be prepared as we expect higher demand next year,” Froberg said by telephone today.

Volvo aims to finish this year with sales of about 380,000 cars, Froberg said. CEO Stefan Jacoby wants to boost sales to 800,000 cars in 10 years.

Volvo plans new XC30

Volvo plans new XC30

Volvo has prioritised the development of an entry-level SUV as part of a broader future model strategy instigated by its new boss, Stefan Jacoby.
Aimed at significantly increasing sales in Europe, where Volvo has seen market share plummet in recent years, the new four-wheel drive is also being looked upon to provide a basis for planned production activities in China following the Swedish car maker’s recent purchase by Geely.

The compact SUV, due to hit UK showrooms by the end of 2013 and be sold under the name XC30, has been conceived to compete on performance, features and price with the new BMW X1 as well as the upcoming Audi Q3 and a junior off-roader presently under development at Mercedes-Benz, expected to be called the GLC.

Based on a four-wheel-drive version of the existing C30’s contemporary unitary platform, known internally as the P1 structure, the XC30 is being conceived to provide Volvo with increased appeal among younger buyers.
It’s also being designed to provide the sort of profitability achieved by the XC60, the company’s best-selling model.

Insiders describe the five-seat XC30 as being instantly recognisable as a Volvo with an appearance “in the mould of the XC60 but with added visual dynamism and a class-leading interior”.
At around 4350mm in length, the new Volvo is 280mm shorter than the two-year-old XC60. The XC30’s prioritisation has come at the expense of the new S40, which has been placed on indefinite hold some 18 months out from its planned introduction in a bid to free up engineering capacity.

Speaking about the decision to delay the five-door S40, Volvo’s new boss Jacoby said: “I’d rather get two or three cars right than attempt to compete in every market segment.”
There may be two different versions of the XC30: a standard-wheelbase version for Europe and a stretched model for China and, perhaps, North America.
The move would mirror the strategy of Jacoby’s former employee, Volkswagen, whose Tiguan is sold with a 2605mm wheelbase in Europe but is lengthened by 115mm to 2720mm for sale in China.
