How to fix iOS 9.3’s broken Safari, Mail and Messages links

If you've been hit by the iOS 9.3 broken links you can follow these steps to fix the issue whilst we wait for a full update from Apple. Unfortunately you'll need to hook your iPhone or iPad up to your computer and sync with iTunes.



  1. If you still have it installed, delete the Booking.com app from your device
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode
  3. Plug your device into your computer and open iTunes
  4. Turn your device off and on
  5. Make sure you have the Booking.com app in iTunes on your computer - download link
  6. Keep Airplane Mode on!
  7. In iTunes, sync the Booking.com app to your device
    1. Select your iOS device in iTunes
    2. Change to the Apps tab
    3. Search for Booking.com and press install
    4. itunes-9.3-safari-fix
    5. Press Sync
  8. Wait for the sync to finish, then open the Booking.com app on your device
  9. Force close the Booking.com app by double tapping the home button and swiping up
  10. Force close Safari by double tapping the home button and swiping Safari up
  11. Delete the Booking.com app
  12. Turn off Airplane Mode
  13. Open Safari - your links should work again! It'll also fix any problems with links from other apps like Mail or Messages.
You may need to try this a few times for it to work, it seems like a specific timing needs to occur for the correct caches to clear.


Thanks to Booking.com quickly fixing their side! You should be able to safely reinstall their app again after confirming these steps worked.

O Hofmeister diz que houve 2 updates da BOOKING.
Pode acontecer que só tenhas instalado o update da que não introduziu o erro no sistema.

Ou seja, que eles tenham lançado uma versão com erro, se tenham apercebido do erro, tenham corrigido e lançado outra actualização.
Quem fez o primeiro update... lixou-se.
Quem fez apenas o segundo update... safou-se.

É uma hipótese.

Seja como for, o problema é do iOS, que deveria proteger-se contra os erros nas aplicações.
Tal como têm a sandbox para evitar que um erro numa aplicação contamine outra(s) aplicação(ões).

Como é que consgues ter uma app que nao usas instalada? Comeca-me logo a dar urticaria e tenho de a apagar..

Em tempos (jailbreak times) já tive mais de 400 apps instaladas e agora tenho ~60 (e continuo sempre a reduzir as que posso)

Booking.com bug


Now another bug has been revealed to be caused by Apple’s Universal Links feature, which allows apps to claim ownership of particular web links, opening in say the Guardian app rather than theguardian.com in mobile Safari.


Although the bug – which causes apps including Mail, Messages and Safari to crash when a link is tapped – is not confined to iOS 9.3, users began to complain in larger numbers after the update.


Developers isolated the problem to the Booking.com app. Steve Troughton-Smith and Ben Collier discovered that the app had a 2.3MB Universal Links essentially listing every link on the Booking.com site. The file appears to cause issues via its sheer size as well as within iOS’s Shared Web Credentials system, sending the iPhone or iPad into a crash loop causing it to become unresponsive and drain its batteries faster than normal.


Apps typically use wildcards to indicate that any link with a certain domain, such as Booking.com, will be opened by the dedicated app, rather than listing every link individually, with Universal Links files being only a few kilobytes in size. The Booking.com app has been updated to change the problem file, which will prevent new users from being caught out by the bug, but those who have already been hit by the bug appear still to be affected after the update.

O que eu não percebo é porque é que o "cache" (tabela de interceptores / Universal Links) não é limpo assim que se desinstala a aplicação.
Nem após um reboot...
Seria de esperar que isto fosse limpo após desinstalar.

Que grande palhaçada...

CUIDADO AO INSTALAR E ACTUALIZAR APLICAÇÕES

Para todos os efeitos isto é uma vulnerabilidade do sistema, e pode ser usada maliciosamente.
Ou seja, até sair uma versão 9.3.1 com esta protecção implementada (que deveria estar desde início), o iOS está vulnerável.

E mesmo depois da 9.3.1, poderão existir vulnerabilidades semelhantes a estas ainda por corrigir.
E de certeza que os "hackers" vão tentar descobri-las, e tentar aproveitá-las.

Instalar o Battery Doctor? Acho que limpa a cache.....

De facto é estranho que desinstalar a app e fazer o soft reset não resolva o problema dos universal links. Curioso também que desde 21 houve 2 actualizações ao booking, mas que aparentemente nada ajudaram.

Um clean install limpará a cache e será então a minha próxima tentativa mal tenha o itunes por perto.
