TOKYO -- Long live the Lexus supercar. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus, which ended a two-year production run of the $375,000 LFA in 2012 after manufacturing 500 units, will build a successor to the 552-horsepower car, Executive Vice President Mark Templin told reporters today. The plan has the endorsement of Toyota President Akio Toyoda, he said, without providing specifics.
"Akio believes that every generation deserves to have a car like an LFA, so we're building an LFA for the generation we have today," Templin said in Kyushu, Japan, before a ceremony for the new Lexus NX crossover. "At some point, there may be another special car for another generation."
The LFA was a decade-long project that Templin said motivated Lexus engineers, improved the brand's reputation and influenced work on premium models the company has introduced since.
It also gave the world's largest automaker a model to compete with brands including Volkswagen AG's Porsche, Fiat S.p.A.'s Ferrari and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz.
Lexus has turned the U.S. luxury car market back into a three-brand race this year after years of Toyoda pushing the company's premium division to expand its reputation beyond quality and add styling and performance attributes.
Redesigned versions of the IS sedan and GX SUV have helped narrow the lead of Mercedes-Benz and BMW AG's BMW in the U.S. market this year.

It's very likely that most of us have worked somewhere that had substandard equipment. I used to process paperwork that required the constant use of a computer. My employer's machines were ancient and saddled with software that frequently acted up.
I don't think the people at the Lexus Design Center in central Japan have the same problem. Their 11-year-old office features spaces such as a "Real-Scale Theater" with a trio of big screens that allow the automotive artists to view 3D, 360-degree designs in simulated environments.
In the "Examination Hall," employees can examine the lines of clay models on remote control turnstiles under the lighting generated by one of five modes. The room's roof is retractable, which allows them to view their work in natural light.
"Cubicle work" takes on a whole new meaning at the glass-fronted building. According to Lexus, "One enters the ['Virtual Reality Cube'] ... , sits in a 'driver's seat' and dons a pair of 3D glasses. What follows is an uncanny simulation of a new car's design interior, with images beamed in from multiple projectors overhead."

What does the 200h powertrain comprise?
A 1.8-litre 98bhp Atkinson cycle petrol engine (code 2ZR-FXE) mated to an 81bhp electric motor.
Which model(s) is it available on?
The 200h powertrain is the sole engine choice for the CT range globally.
Why is it called ‘200h’?
The number ‘200’ references the fact that the car’s power output is equivalent to a conventional 2.0-litre petrol engine, while the ‘h’ stands for hybrid. This naming strategy is consistent across the Lexus range.
What are the performance and emissions figures?
Total power output is 134bhp and the 0-62mph sprint time is 10.3 seconds. Top speed is 112mph and CO2 emissions range from 82g/km to 94g/km.
Why is the total power output different to the combined outputs of the petrol engine and electric motor?
At times, some power is earmarked for charging the car’s hybrid battery. Furthermore, the delayed closing of the intake valve during the Atkinson cycle engine’s compression stroke can cause a power shortcoming, which the electric motor supplements. For more on this, read: How an Atkinson cycle engine works.
300h
What does the 300h powertrain comprise?
A 2.5-litre 178bhp Atkinson cycle petrol engine (code 2AR-FSE) mated to a 141bhp electric motor.
Which model(s) is it available on?
The 300h engine is available on the IS, GS and NX models.
What are the performance and emissions figures?
Total power output from this unit varies marginally between the three models that it is available on – IS, GS and NX – at 220, 221 and 195bhp, respectively.
The 0-62mph sprint time for the IS 300h is 8.3 seconds; top speed is 125mph. For GS and NX, the 0-62mph sprint time is 9.2 seconds, while top speeds are 119 and 112mph, respectively. CO2 figures range from 99g/km to 109g/km on IS models, 109g/km to 113g/km on GS models, and 116g/km to 121g/km on NX models.
200t
What does the 200t powertrain comprise?
The 200t powertrain (code 8AR-FTS) is the first turbocharged petrol engine from Lexus; it has a 2.0-litre displacement.
Which model(s) is it available on?
This powertrain was introduced to the NX range in January 2014, though customer deliveries do not begin until March. It is offered exclusively in F Sport grade, which is priced at £38,095 on-the-road.
In the same way that the letter ‘h’ is a identifies hybrid models, the ‘t’ in 200t is in reference to the fact that the engine is turbocharged.
What are the performance and emissions figures?
Total output is 235bhp and 0-62mph takes 7.1 seconds. Top speed is 124mph and CO2 emissions are 183g/km.
450h
What does the 450h powertrain comprise?
A 3.5-litre, six-cylinder, Atkinson cycle petrol engine (code 2GR-FXE) that delivers between 246bhp (RX 450h) and 288bhp (GS 450h) mated to a a 165bhp (RX 450h) or 197bhp (GS 450h) electric motor.
Which model(s) is it available on?
The 450h engine is available on the GS and RX models. This is the sole engine choice for the RX range in the UK.
What are the performance and emissions figures?
Total power output for the RX 450h is 295 bhp. Total output for the GS 450h is 341bhp. For the RX, the 0-62mph sprint time is 7.8 seconds and for the GS, the time is 5.9 seconds. Top speeds are 124mph and 155mph, respectively. CO2 figures range from 145g/km on RX models and on GS models, are consistent across the range at 141g/km.
460
The 460 is missing the letter h, does this mean it is not a hybrid?
The 460 powertrain is not a hybrid; it is a 4.6-litre V8 petrol powerplant (code 1UR-FSE).
Which model is it available on?
The 460 engine is available exclusively on the Lexus LS short wheelbase model.
