Italy - WRC Leg two report
The day began with BP-Ford World Rally Team's Marcus Gronholm on top of the leaderboard. Gronholm drove hard early and managed to increase his lead over Kronos Total Citroen World Rally Team's Sebastien Loeb. Loeb won the event in 2005 and at the end of the first stage of the day was 36.5 seconds behind Gronholm.
Subaru World Rally Team's Petter Solberg returned to action after retiring from the final stage of the first Leg and captured the third quickest time on the opening stage, but Solberg's battle for a possible points finish was more than an uphill climb.
Solberg began the second day in 14th overall, and after the first stage of the morning, he had failed to move further up the standings. He did, however, close the gap behind First Motorsport's Francois Duval. Duval has had a largely uneventful event, as his stage times have been consistently outside the top eight. At the end of the seventh stage, Solberg sat one minute 48.5 seconds from 13th overall.
Mikko Hirvonen began the day in third overall, and completed the seventh stage with the fourth quickest time. Loeb continued to pull away from the young Finn, and Hirvonen was 47.9 seconds behind Loeb after the test.
Gigi Galli posted another top-five stage time and moved into fifth overall. Galli moved past Dani Sordo who finished seventh on the opening stage.
Henning Solberg began the morning as the highest placed Peugeot 307 and completed the first stage with the sixth quickest time. Sordo was seventh and Chris Atkinson - who began the day as the highest placed Subaru - was eighth on the stage.
The second stage of the second day saw Gronholm fall victim to 'Ford's Curse'. Gronholm hit a rock after 'Micky's Jump' which caused his engine to dump oil. Gronholm again went from leading an event to retirement. As a result, Sebastien Loeb took the overall lead from the Finn and the entire field moved up one position.
Petter Solberg captured the second quickest time on the second stage of the day and closed the gap behind Duval to 26.1 seconds.
Mikko Hirvonen was shocked when he was told the news of his team-mate's forced stop on the stage, but vowed to drive on. Dani Sordo captured the fourth quickest time on the second stage and as a result moved recaptured fourth overall from Galli. The battle for fourth was proving to be the most exciting for fans of the home-country favourite and the 2005 FIA Junior World Rally Champion. Sordo held a 0.8 second advantage over Galli as the field moved into the final stage of the morning before service.
Chris Atkinson finished the stage with the sixth quickest time, a mere 0.7 seconds behind Galli. Atkinson held a 22.1 second lead over Xavier Pons into the third stage of the morning. Pons finished the stage seventh overall - 3.6 seconds behind Atkinson - and moved from eighth to seventh overall because of Gronholm's stop.
Henning Solberg completed the eighth stage with the eighth quickest time, but the Norwegian suffered a spin which caused him to finish 51.8 seconds off Loeb's pace, though he retained the third overall position.
The ninth stage again spelled disaster for another competitor as Henning Solberg was forced to stop mid-stage. Because of Solberg's failure to complete the stage, all the drivers behind Hirvonen moved up another position in the classifications.
Sebastien Loeb captured his fourth stage victory of Rally d'Italia Sardegna - 2.3 seconds ahead of Galli. The Italian was driving to reclaim the position that Sordo had captured the stage earlier and because of his stage time, Galli held a 6.3 second lead over Sordo at the end of the ninth stage.
Petter Solberg continued to post top-three times with his third on the ninth stage. After three completed stages, Solberg had reduced Duval's hold on 13th overall to a mere 0.2 seconds.
Sordo posted the fourth quickest time on the stage, followed by his Citroen team-mate Xavier Pons. Pons finished 1.5 seconds ahead of Chris Atkinson and had reduced the Australian's lead to 20.6 seconds.
Jussi Valimaki and Manfred Stohl rounded out the top eight with seventh and eighth respectively. Stohl has had somewhat of a disappointing event thus far, as he held ninth overall at the end of the stage. Valimaki moved into the top eight overall as the field moved into service.
The first stage after the return from service saw Subaru World Rally Team's Petter Solberg capture his first stage victory of the event. Solberg completed the stage with a 6.6 second lead over Galli. Galli drove to hold off Sordo, but the young Spaniard was not far behind. Sordo finished just 0.3 seconds behind the Italian.
Sebastien Loeb finished the tenth stage with the fourth fastest time, but his rally lead was solidly intact thanks to Hirvonen finishing behind the Frenchman in fifth. Loeb's rally lead going into the penultimate stage of the event was one minute 58.6 seconds ahead of Hirvonen.
Chris Atkinson finished the stage with the sixth quickest time, and because of a penalty incurred during the service break, Atkinson ended the tenth stage in eighth overall.
Xavier Pons moved into sixth overall but again failed to better Atkinson. But thanks to Atkinson's penalty, Pons held fifth overall at the end of the stage.
Manfred Stohl rounded out the top eight. Stohl had complained of his front wheels locking during the opening test of Leg one and has not posted his usual times on gravel during the first two Legs. Stohl ended the tenth stage 38.6 seconds behind Atkinson for eighth overall.
The penultimate stage of the second Leg firmly belonged to Sebastien Loeb. Loeb completed the longest stage of the rally 14.4 seconds ahead of the next quickest driver - Dani Sordo. Sordo, who finished the stage 5.7 seconds ahead of Gigi Galli, closed the Italian's lead to 0.9 seconds.
Mikko Hirvonen completed Monte Lerno 2 0.5 seconds behind Sordo with the third quickest time. Galli captured the fourth quickest time on the stage and was dangerously close to losing his position to a stalking Sordo.
Subaru's Chris Atkinson and Petter Solberg completed the stage with the fifth and sixth quickest times respectively. At the end of the 11th stage, Solberg held ninth and Atkinson held seventh leading into the final stage.
Xavier Pons, who had driven steadily the entire event, finished the stage with the seventh quickest time and had a one minute 33.8 second hold on fifth overall. Pons was followed by Manfred Stohl, who lost another position to Petter Solberg.
The final stage of the Leg saw Sebastien Loeb capture another stage victory. Loeb's stage victory was not the surprise, however. The real drama on the stage was the battle for third between Sordo and Galli - where Sordo was the victor.
Mikko Hirvonen captured the second quickest time on the final stage, followed by Sordo. Hirvonen held second leading into the final day while Sordo held third by 1.3 seconds over Galli.
Subaru's Petter Solberg posted the fourth quickest time on the stage and held ninth overall leading into the final day. Solberg began the day six minutes 49.7 seconds off the leader's pace and ended the second Leg six minutes 57.8 seconds off Loeb's time. Though he fell further behind the leader in the overall classification, the Norwegian managed to climb from 14th to ninth in just six stages.
Gigi Galli took the fifth fastest time on the final stage of the day despite reports of liquid leaking from his Peugeot 307's engine. Even he completed the stage, he stopped on the liaison stage back to service.
Chris Atkinson captured the sixth quickest time and held sixth overall leading into the final day. Atkinson goes into the last Leg one minute 29.6 seconds behind Pons for fifth overall. Pons finished the stage with the seventh quickest time and was 4.9 seconds off Atkinson's stage time.
Jussi Valimaki finished the stage with the eighth fastest time and held seventh overall as the field moves into the final day.
Francois Duval had a relatively quiet second Leg as the Belgian began the day in 13th and ended the Leg in 11th overall. The First Motorsport driver stated that he will use the remaining time to prepare his Skoda's set-up for the BP Acropolis Rally of Greece.
Gareth MacHale finished the day 12th overall as he continues to learn the ropes of the Italian rally. MacHale was followed by Luis Perez Companc in the overall classification. Companc finished the second Leg as the higher placed of the two Stobart VK M-Sport Ford Rally Team drivers - 13th.
Matthew Wilson drove a much calmer day compared to the first Leg, but the young Briton was 55 minutes 13.3 seconds off Loeb's pace. Wilson too will be using the final Leg to gain experience and prepare his Focus for the BP Acropolis Rally of Greece.
The day was also relatively uneventful for Red Bull Skoda's Andreas Aigner and Harri Rovanpera. Both drivers are contesting their first gravel event with the Skoda Fabia, and neither driver was able to crack the top 10 during the second Leg.
