Driver quotes - Service B (after SS4)

18 August 2006

Petter Solberg: "It's very tough out there. I'm very happy with the car. It is jumping well and landing well and on the fast sections it's really good. I need to find a bit more feeling on the narrower sections but even when it is slippery I am in control and know that I could still drive faster. It's good to have such a feeling and we seem to be going in the right direction."

Chris Atkinson: "It's been a good start to the day. It was raining heavily on the first and last of those stages and there was quickly a good bit of mud with changing grip levels on some corners. The car is definitely easier to drive and we are heading in the right direction. I'm feeling comfortable in the car and I don't think there's reason to change much. I still feel there's more there and I could have gone faster. We've got a good position and we'll try to keep holding onto that."

Rally Finland - Leg one

17 August 2006
SS1: 2000hrs, Thurs 17 Aug, Killeri 1 (2.06km)

Leg one of Rally Finland got underway on Thursday night when crews tackled the spectator-friendly Superspecial stage at Killeri, 13km from Jyvaskyla. Constructed on a loose surface oval track, more typically used for the sport of horse-trotting, the circuit extended into the car parks outside the complex to make a twisty and challenging 2.06km loop. Although there had been rain showers during the day, the sun shone for the thousands of fans who flocked to the track to watch the head-to-head racing. Over such a short distance the times of the top drivers were extremely close and the top five were separated by less that one second. Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson each won their pairings and finished second and sixth respectively. The stage winner was Sebastien Loeb who edged 0.2 sec ahead of Solberg to claim the overnight lead.
Fastest Time: Loeb (Citroen) 1:21.4

SS2: 0921hrs, Fri 18 Aug, Lankamaa (24.98km)

Friday, 0800hrs and light rain was falling when crews left Jyvaskyla to begin the second section of Leg one. By 0921hrs the rain was falling heavily as the first car started the first proper stage of the rally, the 24km section from the town of Lankamaa. Crews splashed their way through the wet stage and reported that the rain had made it far more slippery and muddy than when they drove it on the recce. Marcus Gronholm was the early pace-setter, stopping the clock 8.5sec ahead of his Ford team mate Mikko Hirvonen, who was next quickest. Petter Solberg was third, with Sebastien Loeb fourth and Chris Atkinson rounding off the top five performers. Matthew Wilson lost more than three minutes to the leaders when he got a puncture and stopped to change the wheel. Problems too for local driver Janne Tuohino – a broken intercom meant he heard no pace notes for the first 10km.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 11:59.7

SS3: 1009hrs Laukaa (11.82km)

The rain continued to fall but despite the slippery conditions, standing water and mud, the stage proved drama-free for all of the leading competitors. Times were extremely close – just 11 seconds separated the top 10 – and Gronholm’s stage winning performance was only 0.1sec quicker than that of Hirvonen, who was second. In a mirror of the previous stage, Solberg, Loeb and Atkinson completed the top five places.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 5:40.8

SS4: 1104hrs Ruuhimaki (7.57km)

The final stage before the midday 30-minute service was one of the shortest of the rally and took the fastest three drivers less than four minutes to complete. Gronholm made it three wins from three stages, while Loeb, aiming for a record 27th WRC win, was next quickest, 0.9sec behind. The Subaru duo of Solberg and Atkinson were third and sixth and continued to show the improved competitiveness of their cars on gravel. Mikko Hirvonen was fourth fastest, despite a close call when he went wide at a corner and almost slid into a ditch.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 3:57.2

SS5: 1308hrs Vellipohja 1 (36.39km)

After service, crews drove 31km south west of Jyvaskyla to the forest roads near Korpilahti. In its current format, the Vellipohja stage was tackled for the first time last year. On that attempt, it gained notoriety for its deceptive jumps that caught out several leading competitors, launching cars metres into the air and causing painful landings for drivers and co-drivers. This time around crews were better prepared for the hazardous ‘yumps’ and SS5 was less problematic. Compared to the morning, weather conditions had improved and, although there were some rain showers, the road surface was generally drier. Loeb ended Gronholm’s run of stage wins by going quickest and moving ahead of Hirvonen and Petter Solberg into second place on the leaderboard. Xavier Pons and Gigi Galli both lost time with spins, while a broken intercom in Manfred Stohl’s Peugeot meant he could not hear his co-driver.
Fastest Time: Loeb (Citroen) 17:51.9

SS6: 1417hrs Mokkipera 1 (12.61km)

Before another visit to the service area, crews tackled the Mokkipera stage, once famous for its sequence of six massive jumps near the start. Unfortunately, after overcrowding problems at this popular spectator spot in 2005, organisers cut out the section for 2006 and the stage was shortened by 1.5km. Loeb secured his second stage win of the day, but his winning margin of 1.1sec over Gronholm meant the Finn’s overall lead still stood at 13 seconds. Petter Solberg was third fastest through the test with Atkinson sixth. Austrian Manfred Stohl hit more problems when his car left the road and collected bodywork damage. Stohl managed to get going again and completed the stage but the incident cost him more than five minutes to the leaders. Problems too for Finnish driver Kristian Sohlberg when he retired from the Leg with an engine problem.
Fastest Time: Loeb (Citroen) 6:11.2

SS7: 1636hrs Vellipohja 1 (36.39km)

Revitalised after the service halt, crews made their way back into the countryside for the final group of three stages – each a repeat of one from earlier in the Leg. In comparatively dry conditions, Gronholm was back on the attack to take the stage win and pull four more seconds ahead of Loeb. The Frenchman was second quickest, followed by Hirvonen and Petter Solberg. A notable absentee from the top-five stage sheet was Atkinson who dropped 56 seconds to the leaders when his car’s engine started to overheat. Mud and gravel picked up in a very rutted section had coated his car’s radiator and the engine’s control systems automatically cut power to keep the temperature under control.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 18:05.8

SS8: 1745hrs Mokkipera 2 (12.61km)

The final forest stage of the day brought more sudden downpours of rain, which affected some competitors more than others. Running at the head of the field, Sebastien Loeb was one of the lucky ones who managed to avoid the worst of the weather and the Frenchman set the quickest time. Other drivers reported torrential rain and a road surface that quickly became muddy and extremely slippery. Mikko Hirvonen was one of those caught up in the rain, this, and a stall on the line caused him to cross the finish line 17.5 seconds slower than Loeb. Petter Solberg set the fifth-fastest time, while his older brother Henning was third in his Peugeot 307, his best stage result of the Leg so far.
Fastest Time: Loeb (Citroen) 6:20.1

SS9: 2000hrs Killeri 2 (2.06km)

Leg one ended with a return trip to the Superspecial stage at the Killeri horse-trotting track. As before, crews tackled the 2km loop in pairs in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators. Although the road was wet and slippery the rain held off long enough for the crowd to see Gronholm take the stage win, with Loeb second and Sordo third.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 1:21.6

Subaru World Rally Team sporting director, Luis Moya

Overall, the team is pleased with the improved performance of the car compared to the earlier part of the season. Petter lost some time to the weather conditions while Chris has driven very well and was unfortunate to drop time with an intermittent overheating problem caused by a partially blocked radiator. We have proven that our new development direction is correct, but clearly have to do more to be in a position to push for wins.

Petter Solberg

Today has mainly been very good. I feel the car has improved very much particularly when jumping and in the rougher parts of the stages. We’ve been very unlucky with the weather and then losing time stuck behind Manfred Stohl. For tomorrow we’re going to keep pushing as we want to get up onto the podium.

Chris Atkinson

I’m pretty satisfied with how we drove today. From the start we targeted a top six position and despite the tricky conditions and the time we lost on the last stages we are there. I’m sure that we can fix the overheating and tomorrow we look forward to getting back out there and setting more good times.

Mario Isola, Pirelli Competizioni Rally Manager

We are reasonably happy with today's result of leg 1. Like in Germany the weather conditions are quite changeable and it's not easy to make the right choice of tyres. Anyway I think that the performance and consistency showed today are good, Petter can fight for the podium and we have to be concentrated until the end of this long and difficult rally. Chris is also doing very good stage times and the 6th position of today is an encouraging result. Looking at the other categories it's very exciting the battle between Anton Alen and Patrik Flodin, both on Subaru/Pirelli cars, divided by 0.1 seconds after 8 stages and more than 50 kms.

Tomorrow's Leg

Leg two starts from Jyvaskyla at 0600hrs. Featuring eight more timed tests and 144 competitive kilometres, Saturday’s Leg takes crews to more classic gravel stages including the two Ouninpohja sections.

Subaru blow

After an encouraging opening leg in Finland, things went wrong for the Subaru World Rally Team this morning.

Chris Atkinson, lying sixth at the start of the day, began losing gears in his Impreza in the first of the day's stages and by the time he finished, had only third gear left. However, he headed for the next two stages, the two Ouninpohja stage, albeit slowly.

However, Petter Solberg, fourth overall, went off the road 700m from the start of the stage. Although both Petter and co-driver Phil Mills are unharmed, they have retired from the event. The team will attempt to recover the car and determine if Solberg can re-start the third leg under SupeRally regulations.

The car never lies

Marcus Gronholm has been saying that he is taking no risks and has relaxed his pace to ensure he reaches the finish and claims the win.

However, his Ford Focus RS WRC's on-board data recorder tells a different story. The system demonstrates that in the Ouninpohja stage, he was in top gear and at full throttle for 46 seconds and averaged a speed of 171kph during that time. Average.

It's the longest time recorded by the team. Ever.

Rally Finland - Leg two
19 August 2006

Starters
Eighty-six of the original 101 starters left Jyväskylä this morning for the second Leg.

Route
Crews tackled eight classic forest stages in the countryside to the west of the host city. The Leg featured a repeat pass through the infamous Ouninpohja section.

Weather
Dry and bright all day, with temperatures between 16°C and 24°C.

Retirements
Solberg, Pons, Sordo

Subaru World Rally Team summary

The second Leg of Rally Finland turned out to be a frustrating one for the Subaru team, as lead driver Petter Solberg crashed out of fourth place and two mechanical problems dropped Chris Atkinson from sixth to 21st. The day started well for Solberg, who set the third fastest time on the opening test, but a crash on the next brought his event to a sudden and premature end. Once Atkinson’s problems dropped him out of contention for a podium finish, his focus switched to building experience and testing ahead of forthcoming gravel events. Despite this, by the end of the Leg he had climbed back up to 13th overall.

SS10: 0706hrs Vaheri (19.91km)
In contrast to the gloomy weather seen at the start of the rally, crews left the Jyväskylä service area in dry and sunny conditions at the beginning of day two. The road surface was damp because of early morning dew as the first cars tackled the stage with the top 15 driving in reverse order. Running 14th on the road, rally leader Marcus Gronholm was quickest, with Sebastien Loeb second and Petter Solberg third. After a good start to the rally, sixth placed Chris Atkinson had a setback at the pre-stage 10-minute service when technicians noticed a gear selection problem with the fresh gearbox they had fitted at the end of the previous day. Atkinson collected thirty seconds of penalty time for leaving service three minutes late and, as they had been unable to fix the system, he soon had shifting problems on the stage too, and had to pull over several times to let other cars pass. Managing to select third gear only, he crossed the line almost seven minutes slower than Gronholm, with the likelihood of two more difficult stages before a return to the service area.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 9:47.6

SS11: 0820hrs Ouninpohja Lansi 1 (13.98km)
Regarded as one of the most demanding and difficult stages in the WRC, Ouninpohja was last run in its 33km original and classic form in 2004. On that occasion Petter Solberg set a new stage record, smashing the previous one by six seconds. But as average speeds approached 130kph, organisers acted to slow cars down and for 2005 the stage was shortened and split in two. With blind crests, jumps, deceptive corners and an undulating gravel surface, the first section remains a particularly stern test. This year, Ouninpohja brought Petter Solberg’s rally to a violent and dramatic end when his car drifted wide over a crest 700 metres from the start and slammed into a bank at 120kph. The impact spun the car around and launched it into a series of rolls. Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills were shaken but uninjured in the crash, however their Impreza was too badly damaged to continue. Elsewhere, the combination of a shattered windscreen and the early morning sunshine gave Mikko Hirvonen visibility problems, while Xavier Pons was another driver in trouble - the Spaniard rolled his Citroen and retired from the Leg. Atkinson completed the stage using only third gear and dropped a further 2min 45sec to the leaders.
Fastest Time: Loeb (Citroen) 6:33.0

SS12: 0843hrs Ouninpohja Ita 1 (16.55km)
The second section of 'old' Ouninpohja was a fearsome challenge too and, like the stage before, there was more trouble at the top of the leader board. Unusually it was Loeb who had problems; the result of cutting a corner 5km before the finish line and clipping a large rock on the apex. The impact immediately burst his Xsara’s front-left tyre and the car arrived at the time control with shredded rubber flailing from its wheel. Marcus Gronholm and a number of other drivers following Loeb through the stage also hit the same rock, but Loeb came off badly and dropped 32 seconds to Gronholm, who won the stage. According to Loeb, his fight for the rally victory ended at this point. Gigi Galli set the second fastest time, despite reporting some strange noises from his Peugeot, while Henning Solberg was third - probably helped by the fact that he had no front brakes. Kosti Katajamaki was another driver to hit the 5km rock and come off badly; the young Finn crossed the finish line with heavy front end damage and a suspension upright poking through the bonnet. Mikko Hirvonen drove cautiously through the section to avoid jarring his broken windscreen - he was fifth fastest, 22 seconds slower than Gronholm. Still using third gear only, Atkinson brought his Subaru through the test in one piece but dropped another 2min 58sec to the leaders.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 7:51.7

SS13: 1144hrs Urria (10.00km)
Revitalised after a 30-minute check-up at the service area, crews headed back into the forests for another three stages. The loop started with Urria, famous for a massive jump (the biggest of the rally) 5km from the start line, and a stretch later on with five smaller jumps in quick succession. Gronholm set the quickest time, Loeb was next, 2.4 seconds adrift, while Hirvonen, with a new windscreen, was third. Chris Atkinson’s car received a new gearbox during the service and with his car back up to full strength the Australian recorded the sixth fastest time. Having lost so much time earlier, Atkinson was down in 20th place overall and switched his focus to testing ahead of the next gravel rallies.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 4:40.8

SS14: 1307hrs Ouninpohja Lansi 2 (13.98km)
In dry and bright conditions, crews tackled the first of the repeated Ouninpohja stages. After Loeb’s time loss and Petter Solberg’s retirement, the top three drivers were all relatively secure in their overall positions and each said they were taking things a little steadier. Nevertheless, Gronholm still went quickest, with Loeb and Hirvonen closely following the split times and keeping the overall gaps between them almost the same. Loeb’s team-mate Daniel Sordo became another victim of Ouninpohja when his Xsara left the road straight after a jump. Sordo and co-driver Marc Marti were uninjured but mechanical damage meant they retired from the Leg. Also in trouble was 10th placed Jari-Matti Latvala, who dropped 10 minutes to the leaders after one of his rear tyres caught fire. The Finn has to stop to put out the flames and fit the spare wheel.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 6:30.7

SS15: 1330hrs Ouninpohja Ita 2 (16.55km)
On the last stage before another 30-minute service halt Gronholm, Loeb and Hirvonen topped the stage sheets once again. With little to gain and everything to lose, all three said they were sacrificing some speed and concentrating on getting a clean run. Henning Solberg and Gigi Galli were next through, with Atkinson in the Subaru World Rally Team’s remaining Impreza WRC2006 taking the sixth spot. The Australian moved up to thirteenth overall, but remained more than 15 minutes behind Gronholm.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 7:51.8

SS16: 1648hrs Moksi-Leustu (40.96km)
At 41km, the stage from Moksi was the longest of the event and included a complex variety of conditions including wide, narrow, technical and flat-out sections. Numerous blind crests and jumps meant it was probably the busiest stage for co-drivers too. There were no upsets for the lead drivers - the trio of Gronholm, Hirvonen and Loeb topped the stage times again - but Atkinson had another difficult time when his car’s power steering system broke 2km from the start. He finished the stage 2min 41sec slower than Gronholm.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 20:25.6

SS17: 1804hrs Himos (12.97km)
Business as usual for Marcus Gronholm on the last stage of the day - the Finn winning his seventh of the Leg. Henning Solberg finished the day with a flourish to set the second-quickest time, while Loeb and Hirvonen were third and fourth. Galli was fifth, despite crossing the line with some front bodywork damage. Atkinson was sixth, still without power-assisted steering, and moved up to 13th overall.
Fastest Time: Gronholm (Ford) 7:09.1

Petter Solberg
We were coming into a long left-hand corner, went over a crest with a little under-steer and then hit a rock face on the right-hand side. I thought it would be alright, but the car spun around and we ended up rolling. Phil and I are both okay, but the car was quite badly damaged. Despite this, I’m still feeling positive about everything we have done so far and know we have taken something good from this weekend. We have found some improvements and we tried something in the first stage today which was quite positive too, however we still need to work on the consistency. We have a test coming up for Rally Japan now and we have identified some more areas to work on. I’ve got a good feeling about the next rally and I’m definitely not giving up at all.

Mario Isola, Pirelli Competizioni Rally Manager
Totally different weather conditions today in Finland but we are quite happy with the performance of the tyres, and the consistency during the 41 kms of today's very long stage. In the early morning the stages were damp and we decided to use a medium/soft PZERO KP, while in the afternoon it was very hot and completely dry, but also in this conditions our PZERO medium/hard compound were at the top level. Unfortunately the two Subarus were slowed by an accident and mechanical problems but the feeling of the drivers was good. In Group N we are leading and the fight between Anton Alen and Patrik Flodin is very exciting.

Tomorrow's Leg
The third and final Leg of Rally Finland starts from Jyväskylä at 0830hrs. Including four more timed tests and 60 competitive kilometres, Sunday’s route takes crews to two more classic gravel stages to the west of Rally HQ, which are repeated in the afternoon.
