GENEVA SHOW 2011
All-new 1.0-litre turbo gasoline engine
Class-leading performance from all-new Kia engine
· All-new turbocharged version of ‘Kappa’ 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine
· Innovative powertrain offers best-in-class performance and excellent economy
· Series of technologies combine to deliver efficiency gains
Making its international debut on Kia’s Geneva Motor Show stand alongside the new Picanto and Rio models is an all-new version of Kia’s popular ‘Kappa’ gasoline engine, which promises an appealing blend of performance and economy.
The innovative 998 cc engine is Kia’s first three-cylinder unit fitted with a turbocharger to deliver impressive performance for its capacity (110 ps), while retaining the key fuel economy benefits of a small displacement engine.
Carefully tuned by Kia’s engineers, the new unit delivers its maximum torque (137 Nm) from just 1,500 rpm up to 4,500 rpm, for excellent ‘real-world’ driveability, and the turbine design has also been optimised to ensure smooth and responsive operation at all engine speeds.
The new engine is expected to be fitted to Kia production vehicles from June 2012.
Attention to small details reaps large benefits
Painstaking attention to detail by Kia’s engineers has resulted in a series of small but clever developments which all make their contribution to enhancing efficiency, while also reducing weight, complexity and cost, compared to Kia’s normally-aspirated 1.0-litre Kappa unit – itself already a highly-efficient engine.
A Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating – a material typically reserved for application in professional motorsport and high-performance motorcycle engines – is applied to this Kappa’s tappets to reduce friction, and thereby improve efficiency. This improvement is augmented by other changes, including the use of progressive rate ‘beehive’ valve springs, an optimised CVVT programme, low friction piston rings and an off-set crankshaft centre to reduce the horizontal force acting on the piston head, and therefore cut power loss. In total the changes result in an 8.8% fuel economy improvement, while enabling the engine to also deliver an increase in power.
Weight reductions and packaging improvements have also been achieved through the use of an aluminium block with a cast iron liner (15 kg), by integrating the cylinder head and air filter (500 g) and the turbine housing within the exhaust manifold (500 g), and by integrating the engine support bracket with the timing chain cover (1 kg).
Designed for long-life, low-maintenance motoring
In addition to reducing running costs through efficiency savings, the new engine will also offer Kia owners low maintenance costs throughout their vehicle’s lifecycle. Like other Kia Kappa powertrains, this unit is fitted with a chain-driven timing system to ensure low maintenance – with a 10 year / 100,000 miles guaranteed lifespan.

Hot hatch a caminho?
Bem... parece que a Kia está a pensar entrar no segmento da rebeldia: hot hatch a caminho?
Objectivo: melhorar a imagem de marca na Europa que, actualmente, não corresponde ao nível de qualidade e design apresentados.
A hot hatch version of the new Rio could be offered as a way to help Kia build its brand image in Europe.
“The quality and design is much greater than the brand image represents,” says marketing and product planning chief Benny Oeyen. “You can improved this with cars. A helpful car for us would be a hot hatch, cabrio or a coupe.”
A Rio hot hatch is the most likely option in the short term, given the segment’s popularity in Europe, in particular the UK. The Rio show car at the recent Geneva motor show also had some sporty touches, including its large alloys. Oeyen added: “I can imagine a sporty Kia in Europe; we have to develop the brand.”
Kia’s all-new fourth-generation Rio will also be Britain’s most fuel efficient and lowest CO2-emitting car when it goes on sale in September. A new 1.1-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel will be available from launch that, equipped with stop-start, has CO2 emissions of just 85g/km and combined economy of 88mpg.
That will make Ecodynamics-badged 81bhp, 69lb ft version of the new Rio the cleanest, most efficient car on sale, eclipsing the current holder of that claim, the 85mpg/86g/km Smart Fortwo diesel.
Other engines in the new Rio range include 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre petrol units and a 1.4-litre turbodiesel. All will have CO2 emissions of less than 114g/km and economy in excess of 58mpg when equipped with stop-start. Prices for the range are expected to start from around £10,000.

Espias do Rio sedan que será apresentado em Nova Iorque
Our man Jeremy Korzeniewski is attending a Kia event in Phoenix, Arizona this week, and during a press briefing this morning, JK learned that the Korean automaker will be unveiling its 2012 Rio sedan at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The four-door Rio will complement the hatchback bodystyle that bowed at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.
Four powertrains will be available on the Rio overseas – two gas and two diesel – and while mum's the word on which engine(s) will be available here in the United States, we're putting our money on the 1.4-liter gasoline four. This mill produces 108 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed(!) automatic transmission.
In other news, Kia also let slip that the KV7 concept from this year's Detroit Auto Show previews what's in store for the next-generation Sedona minivan. We hinted at this after a conversation with Michael Sprague, Kia's vice president of marketing, though it's still unclear exactly what elements from the KV7 will be incorporated into the next-gen Sedona. The concept focused on a more traditional conversion van setup rather than the family-centric Sedona that currently graces our streets.
EDIT: eu acho que fui enganado... é que tou aqui a olhar para as fotos e a frente não tem nada a ver.Editado pela última vez por xeLa; 02 April 2011, 12:39.
