Viva Portugal e viva o Type-R!:D:D

The new Civic Type R continues to be powered by the naturally-aspirated, high-revving 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine but the unit has been significantly reworked to improve responsiveness using a new balancer shaft and drive-by-wire throttle control. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the engine structure.

Further development of the Type R unit means more useable torque, as the switch to high-lift, long duration valve timing (the cam change) now takes place at a lower 5,200 rpm, and continues all the way to 8,000 rpm. So that screaming, high rpm VTEC range is broader and more accessible. To mark the entry to this ‘power band’ a new i-VTEC indicator just to the right of the digital speedometer is illuminated once the revs rise above 5,200 rpm.

Maximum power is now 204 bhp, reached at 8,000 rpm and the car is more responsive generally, while improved aerodynamics ensure the new car cuts through the air more cleanly. Slightly lower gearing compensates for a small increase in kerb weight.

Acceleration figures are expected to be virtually identical to the 6.4-second 0-60 mph time of the outgoing car – and the new car should match its top speed too, powering on to 146 mph.

The chassis of the Civic 5-door – already widely praised for its handling balance – forms the basis for all 3-door models and provides an ideal platform for the Type R.

Building on the Civic Type S suspension, which is fine-tuned for sharper chassis dynamics, the Type R takes those modifications to the next level. Like the Type S, its rear track is almost an inch wider than that of the 5-door model, but otherwise damper, bush and spring characteristics are all unique to Type R.

Broad 225/40 ZR18 tires provide added grip, while a half an inch reduction in ride height further reduces body roll. Firmer steering, a quicker ratio and stiffer steering box mountings all provide pin-sharp responses to steering wheel input, while the fuel tank’s central location beneath the cabin floor helps to lower the center of gravity and reduces the body’s inertia moment.

While the styling of previous Civic Type Rs has almost been an after-thought, the latest car enhances the already-bold appearance of the Civic to build an incredibly assertive look. Seven-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard and – helped by the car’s low ride height – these tuck neatly under the body colored arches.

The deep front spoiler incorporates a larger air intake to channel air to the induction system, as well as triangular foglamps. There’s no missing the distinct body-colored tailgate rear spoiler, which follows the kick-up line from the rear quarter windows, and provides added down-force. At the front, a black honeycomb mesh grille replaces the glass panel of other Civics, sporting – of course – the infamous red ‘H’ badge.

Inside, it’s all about the driving experience. Front seats are racing-style buckets with large black Alcantara bolsters and red stitching, red fabric seat cushions and backs. The seat bench in the back repeats the same color combination.

Also available will be a fully-equipped GT version, with additional features such as cruise control, dual zone air conditioning, fog lights, automatic lights and wipers and curtain SRS bags. A voice-activated, state-of-the-art navigation system is offered as an option.

Verdict
7 stars out of 10

On the right road, when you’re in the mood, there’s much to like about the latest Civic Type R. Once you’re rowing through the gears and listening to that remarkable engine, you’d forgive it a lot. But this is still a disappointing car overall, with a chassis that is exposed by the retrograde rear suspension. Like the manic Astra VXR, the Type R will have its fans, but we aren’t among them.

Verdict
8 stars out of 10

We’ve been critical of some aspects of the Astra VXR, but still like it a lot. At times, its handling response and dynamism are so breathtaking that we’d happily drive it even if it had no doors. But the fact remains that it would be a better car, and an easier one to drive, if it the engine’s response was more manageable. Nonetheless, on its day, it’s a hugely entertaining machine.

Vw GTI:
Verdict
9 stars out of 10

With this attempt to reinvent the Golf GTi, VW could have followed one of two routes: either produce a basic, lightweight Mk1 successor to take the GTi back to its roots, or take up where the more refined, grown-up Mk2 left off. The first option would have been almost impossible to achieve with the current Golf, which is bigger, safer and better equipped than ever — and inevitably heavier — as the market demands. The smaller Renault Clio Cup 182 owns the minimum weight/maximum fun market, and consequently beats the Golf for thrills down a twisty country road. But this Golf is nevertheless a great entertainer, in stark contrast to the last two generations of GTi. It is also refined, road noise apart, and impressively capable in almost all conditions.
The best hot hatches have always been the automotive equivalent of the Swiss army knife: fun, fast, sporting cars with the ability to adapt to your every need when one car must fit all. The new GTi is just such a car — it should be great to own. It only misses out on five stars because the major controls — steering, brakes and throttle — could all offer more feel.
The GTi has returned, and this time it has image and ability

C4 VTS:

Verdict
7 stars out of 10

If you’ve read this test expecting a Golf GTi rival, you’ll be disappointed — if not at the C4’s value. Blistering speed and incredible handling aren’t what the C4 VTS majors on, but despite average dynamics it is a satisfying all-rounder and a surprisingly entertaining drive.
Its willingness to be driven hard reminds us of some of our favourite old hot Citroëns and Peugeots, such as the ZX Volcane and 306 GTi-6. The VTS also blends an innovative cabin, unique styling and a pleasing ownership proposition. It’s a shame the engine isn’t a stronger performer, but it’s a measure of this car’s appeal that this matters less than it might.

Cooper S Works:
Verdict
8 stars out of 10

Three grand is a lot of money to blow just on your engine but, with the reassurance of a full Mini warranty behind you and a rip-snorting 200bhp motor ahead, we’d be the first to understand if you gave into temptation. The Cooper S Works proves that proper power can be put through the front wheels without compromising the car in the corners. It may have well over double the power of the original Cooper S (and not a lot less than double the weight), but, over 40 years on, its spirit has been reinvented for the 21st century. And that’s something every car enthusiast must applaud.

Mesma classificacao do C4 VTS?[8)]

Já agora ainda na mesma revista...

For: High-revving VTEC engine, cheaper than main rivals, fine seats and driving position

Against: Not that fast, excessive body roll, short on handling finesse, poor rear visibility

Megane RS

Verdict
7 stars out of 10

Perhaps the Mégane’s biggest problem is the badge on its rump. We’ve come to associate the Renaultsport tag with genuinely focused drivers’ cars, but the 225 seems to have been designed with a subtly different set of priorities in mind. As a driver’s hatch it misses the mark because when you really push, its abilities start to fade. Yet as Alfa proved with the 147 GTA, there is certainly room in the market for a blindingly quick hatchback that is comfortable and downright desirable to own that can still provide decent entertainment when the roads get twisty. That the Mégane fills such a brief wins it plenty of our respect.

Clio RS

Verdict
9 stars out of 10

Some will complain that it lacks a few basic aesthetic requirements — there are slight gaps in the wheelarches and no brash exhaust outlets — but when they are replaced by class-leading suspension travel and a working rear diffuser, even the harshest critic will have to concede that the Clio 197 has credibility where it counts.
Spend time with it and you will surely be converted by Renault’s new approach in the 197. It has created a great little fast car.
