citação:The key to all this value and variety is a torsion beam rear axle. It's a cheap and antiquated bit of kit that Vauxhall's engineers claim has allowed them to fiddle with any car's suspension to suit its engine and driving characteristics. Any money saved has then been pumped back into perceived quality. This axle has also enabled the designers to lower the rear seats, improving headroom beneath that angled roof. That said, if you're over six foot, don't get any big ideas.
Engines available on launch were limited and a bit misleading. The range-topping 150bhp 1.9-litre diesel is impressively smooth and torquey, but does nothing for the Hatch's sporting pretensions. All that weight can't help the handling, and it lacks that crucial immediacy of power delivery.
In contrast the Europe-only 200bhp two-litre petrol appears to have the right ingredients. Press the increasingly ubiquitous 'Sport' button, and throttle response is quick and linear. But the car never feels convincingly planted, with both grip and steering too uncertain</u> to encourage much rapid driving.
It's a shame, but there's something missing from the Sport Hatch's road manners that'll keep it in the shade of more highly engineered rivals like the Golf 3dr or C4 VTS.

We say: An unexpected burst of style from Luton's finest, but if only it drove as great as it looks
