Jaguar will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the E-Type model this year with a return to the Geneva auto show where it was first unveiled back in 1961.

Launched that same year, the E-Type quickly became an iconic model, lauded for its design and a fixture of the 60s culture in Britain - one exemplar even sits permanently in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The E-Type came with a 3.8 liter engine producing 265 bhp (198 kW / 269 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque and was one of the fastest production cars around with a top speed of around 150mph (241 km/h).

The model was designed by aeronautical engineer Malcolm Sayer who had also helped shape Le Mans winners such as the C- and D-Type Jaguars.

Production of the E-Type ran for 14 years and more than 70,000 units were sold.

In 1961, it came with a starting price of £2,256,15s (€2,620) or the equivalent of £38,000 (€44,135) today.

Jaguar - the next 12 years

Jaguar-Concepts-821111351334071600x1060.jpg

Jaguar’s management team has now firmed up many of the key product planning decisions, after the recession held back some strategies.
A six-model line-up of two sports cars, three saloons and a soft-roader is planned around two alloy platforms: a riveted monocoque for the saloons/soft-roader and an extrusions/castings structure for the sports cars.
It also seems that the long-rumoured XF coupé has dropped off the plan, a victim of the decision to allocate resources to the new small saloon and soft-roader and switch the XF to alloy body construction.

Instead, an XJ coupé is being rumoured, possibly as the launch vehicle for an advanced hybrid based on some of the tech shown in the C-X75 concept. A revamped version of the 3.0-litre V6 ‘Cleveland’ petrol engine, aimed at Chinese-market XJs, is also on the way.
And in the longer term, there is talk of Jaguar doing an engine supply deal for a new petrol V6 with a partner. This could be Peugeot-Citroën, with whom Jag had a successful V6 diesel collaboration.

Growler E 2011 Concept by Bo Zolland

The Jaguar E-Type turns 50 this year, and we continue to pine for its classic lines to this day. Bo Zolland, a car designer from Sweden, is clearly also a fan of the iconic E-Type shape. Unlike most of us, though, he has the tools and skill to generate a vision of what the E-Type might look like were it to come back to life in the 21st century.

Zolland calls his rendered Jaguar homage the Growler E 2011 Concept, and it clearly takes design cues from the original version. We also spy some 240Z and Chevrolet Corvette, though you could just as easily say those cars learned their lines from the E-Type.

Fittingly, the Growler would be built atop the guts of a Jaguar XKR, which would also donate its 5.0-liter V8 engine (tuned to produce 600 horsepower).

Jaguar's sensational new hatchback has BMW in sight - the firm's smallest-ever car to start from £20,000 due out in 2014.

Jaguar is hatching a bold new plan. It’s no secret that a raft of new and exciting big cat models is on the way – but the greatest surprise is yet to come.

The manufacturer has dropped its biggest hint yet that a premium hatchback, conceived to go head-to-head with the BMW 1-Series, Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 is on the way.

We’ve told you that Jaguar is currently working on a BMW 3-Series rival, a crossover, the F-Type two-seater roadster and a possible production version of the C-X75. But the news that a hatchback could be added to the list comes as a real shock.

It has been widely reported that Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar’s global brand director, has drawn up a wish-list, along with other bosses, for the firm’s future.

He said: “We won’t have a 1-Series-sized car for five to 10 years, but we’re working on some compelling alternative bodystyles that are anti-German luxury car establishment.”

Our exclusive images show how the smallest Jag could look. It’s some way away from production, and although the compact five-door body is a departure, the philosophy behind it sticks closely to the brand’s core values. Hallmark confirmed: “If we go into the smaller car market, we want to build elegant models with great technology that give a sense of occasion and position us above the competition.”

Power is likely to come from a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder engines – one petrol, one diesel – while the underpinnings will be borrowed from the Range Rover Evoque. But the car will be front-wheel-drive only, to cut weight, complexity and cost. Prices are expected to start at £20,000.

Before that, a revisedXFand an XF estate are due later this year, while design work on the next generation XF andXK, set for 2014, is underway. There’s even talk of anXJcoupé, and a shooting brake based on the next XF.

One thing’s for sure: with new owner Tata’s backing, it’s going to be a busy few years for the brand.

New Jaguar models planned

New Jaguar models planned

Jaguar has confirmed that the carmaker is working on a new small saloon that will slot into its line-up below the XF.
The showroom price of the new model is expected to start at around £28,000 in today’s money.
Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar’s Global Brand Director, says that the sub-£30,000 premium car market is ‘four times the size’ of the market for saloons priced above £30,000, making it an essential move.

According to company insiders, the new car will be slightly smaller than today’s XF saloon, while still being big enough to accommodate five adults. There’s no news yet on whether the car will be built around an aluminium platform. However, the replacement for the XF will almost certainly be made from aluminium, will grow in size and will move slightly further upmarket.

Jaguar sources also confirmed that an all-wheel drive version of the XJ saloon is currently under development and will be launched in under 24 months time, possibly coinciding with a mild makeover for Jaguar’s flagship saloon.

The sources say that, although just 20 per cent of all road cars sold in the US are equipped with all-wheel drive, the proportion rises to a huge 70 percent in the Northern ‘snowbelt States’ where Jaguar has traditional had its strongest sales.

These new projects are part of Jaguar’s moves to finally have a presence in some of the most important premium market niches. Indeed, the launch of the four-cylinder diesel XF saloon will hugely improve the car’s prospects in a market where 49 percent of sales are four cylinder diesel models. Indeed, 60 percent of 5-series sales are four-pot diesel models.

Company bosses point out that, while Jaguar has 16 per cent of the premium car market in the UK, it has just five per cent in the important US market, two percent across the wider EU and just one percent in China.

In the next few days Jaguar will launch a 3.0-litre petrol V6 version of the XJ in the booming Chinese market. Tax and import duties on the XJ V8 mean the showroom price is as high as £200,000. The new V6 model, with identical spec levels, will costs the equivalent of ‘just’ £100,000.
